Abstract

Sustainable production and effective management systems are pivotal in achieving environmentally, socially and economically viable company practices. Business pressures mean that companies need to take a holistic approach which may involve some trade-offs. A range of national and internationally agreed stewardship tools (voluntary concepts or standards) exist. Quality, environmental and social stewardship tools are used to communicate to clients and regulators that sustainable practices are followed, most notably ISO 9001, 14001, 26000 and the Global Reporting Initiative. We will illustrate how to structure production and address sustainable development in a consistent and compliant manner. The paper concludes by providing a checklist of data/information that production managers can utilise in order to fulfil such requirements. Ultimately we present streamlined procedures that can deliver improved company practices and communications.
