I devised this concert (which also featured Joanna MacGregor and the Navarra Quartet) in consulatation with pianist Joanna MacGregor, and together we approached composers Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Howard Skempton and Michael Finnissy to commission them to write new works based on folk melodies from the Northeast of England. These three pieces all featured myself on Northumbrian smallpipes. As well as the three world premieres I also performed some solo pieces from the traditional Northumbrian piping repertoire alongside some of my own short pieces in that style. These pieces contrasted with the notated compositions on the programme, including work by James Macmillan and new work by Scottish composer Alasdair Nicholson for Northumbrian pipes and piano, performed by myself and Joanna MacGregor. My composition 'Edge of Light' (commissioned by Guiting Festival 2010) was also performed by myself and Joanna MacGregor, and the concert also included my new (2011) arrangement of the Northumbrian folksong 'Bonny at Morn' for pipes, piano and string quartet as well as a finale of two of my other compositions which I re-arranged for the same forces. The concert was broadcast on Radio 3's 'Hear and Now' and the whole programme was devoted to me and my work.
