Abstract

This chapter examines the nature of academic engagement and the key influences which appear to foster or diminish that engagement. We shall draw, in the main, from the students’ own voices through evidence gathered from two major studies on student engagement conducted in a UK university with undergraduates. This has provided rich and detailed evidence about their perceptions of ‘being a student’.
