In vitro evaluation of osteoblast and fibroblast responses to precipitated nano-particulate calcium carbonate

Abstract

Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 The cellular response of osteoblasts and fibroblasts to nano-particulate calcium carbonate (CaCO3) was investigated experimentally through the examination of cell density, cellular activity and cell morphology compared to when these were absent. Micro-particulate CaCO3, titania and graphite were used as controls, allowing investigations using nano and micron sized particles of the same chemistry. All of the assays showed that nano-particulate CaCO3 did not have an adverse affect on cell behaviour, giving a significant improvement to fibroblast activity when 100 µg ml-1 was added to the culture medium. Both sizes of graphite significantly affected the cell behaviour over 7 days, with minimal cellular activity occurring on the addition of 5500 and 10000 µg ml-1. This was in contrast to the two sizes of titania, where no significant differences were seen in cellular activity. Results indicated that cell response was more dependent upon particle chemistry as opposed to size.
