Whenever the idea of wilderness arises in nature conservation contexts, misunderstandings arise. This article reveals the still largely untapped potential that cultural sciences offer to understand these problems. By discussing three questions - whether the experience of wilderness is an entirely subjective emotion, to what extent the utilization of wilderness is acceptable, and whether we need a new conception of wilderness in central Europe - it becomes clear that the knowledge derived from cultural research about different conceptions of wilderness does indeed help to structure discussions and fosters understanding of disparate positions. This is of great value in practical conservation work because it helps to prevent conflicts from escalating and to solve problems of acceptance.
