The concept of cultural landscape is many faceted. This becomes obvious by its various definitions. This contribution, which applies methods of cultural sciences, aims to characterize “cultural landscape”by analyzing one of its opposites: wilderness. First, we describe different aspects of wilderness:it can be conceived as a place of horror, of heroic fight, of freedom, of origin or a return to wildness. We then distinguish three main types of wilderness: mountains, jungle, and forest. Both the aspects aswell as the types are ideal-typical constructions which are founded on the history of ideas of wilderness. Our approach applies gained insights to the analysis of today’s problems in spatial planning.First, we analyze the tension between wilderness and “cultural landscape” in the German national park“Bayerischer Wald”. We then have a look at the discussion of the so called “Zwischenstadt” (low densitycity or urban sprawl) which can be conceived as a new form of urban wilderness.
