Abstract

Drawing on extensive archival research and bringing to light previously unknown/unstudied publications for and exeriences of children this article establishes that a significant (often influential) proportion of the juvenile population of Britian before the First World War would have encountered Germanophilic, pacifist and anti-militarist texts, ideas and educational programmes. These materials call into question some of the established assumptions about the relationship between children's reading and their willingness to enlist.
