Self Organised Learning Environments (SOLEs, Mitra & Dangwal, 2010) is a co-operative learning format in which groups of 3-4 pupils work together to answer challenging questions. The SOLE method was developed by Professor Sugata Mitra in order to improve the education of children in remote geographical areas in India and has been adapted for schools in England, as an enquiry based teaching approach. Particular developmental work has been undertaken at St Aidan’s School in Gateshead, in NE England. This paper distills the experiences of working alongside a local teacher to develop SOLE practice over a 6 month period and highlights issues with the changing role of the teacher in SOLEs and implications of future teacher training.
