Abstract

This research builds upon the Theatre Volunteer Relationship Lifecycle model developed by Bussell and Forbes (2007). This identified 3 stages: a theatre volunteer engages as a prospective/ active volunteer; determinants (the drivers); and volunteering activity (volunteer management). It is within this final stage that this research focuses in particular the management and leadership of volunteers. This paper reports the first stage of the research and focused on developing an overview of the state of volunteer activity and contribution within theatres in the North East of England. Initial findings indicate a complex situation with a variance in the type of theatres from those operating as charities or member organisations wholly reliant on volunteers and / or members; publically funded; to those operating as commercial organisations accountable to shareholders.
