Notes: This chapter extends our understanding of popular support for the Risorgimento in Britain. It throws a spotlight on some of Mazzini’s less-studied published work in mid-nineteenth century British radical journals such as the Democratic Review (1849–50), Red Republican (1850), English Republic (1851–55) and Northern Tribune (1854–55), whose proprietors were sympathetic to the Italian cause and shared his republican ideals. It argues that their willingness to open up their journals to Mazzini’s own writings and public correspondence, and publish a range of complementary contributions, including poetry, helped him to gain the backing of a core group of middle class intellectuals who were able to tap into wide social, political and business networks to raise the financial support he needed.
