Abstract

A study of regional cultural transmission in England from the mid-fifteenth to the mid-sixteenth century. English parish records are among the best in Europe, and reveal a picture of lay activism in creating and sustaining local musical traditions. Investment in organs and singers was motivated partly by piety, but also by civic pride and an awareness of forms of cultural expression in other communities, both neighbouring and far-flung. This creates a paradox: as elevated forms of worship become more widely dispersed, and more frequently appropriated as expressions of local piety, they become more homogeneous and less localised.
