Abstract

His­toric Landscape Characterisation (HLC) is a method developed in England in the ‘90s and now widely adopted in the UK for the management and planning of historic landscapes. HLC also offers new possibilities for historical and archaeological research into landscapes as they appear today. A prominent role is played by post-medieval archaeology in this new approach. Application of the method has begun to move beyond the UK with current applications in the Mediterranean area, including in Catalonia, Greece and Turkey. This paper examines the possibilities of using this method in the Italian context. The potential compatibility between traditional approaches to studying the Italian landscape and HLC will be emphasized.
