Abstract

This paper presents the requirements of International Labour Organization’s latest Marine labour regulations, which have now been ratified and will come in to force from 20th August 2013. This labour code is titled ILO-MLC 2006 more commonly spoken as MLC-2006. The MLC signifies Maritime Labour Convention. It brings within its fold over 60 existing codes and regulations currently in force. This code is expected to improve the working and living conditions of seafarers on board a ship. It is also expected that this code would motivate youth to opt for seafaring as a profession, which has otherwise not been a very decently reputed profession.
