Abstract

This article proposes an innovative application to address the fragmentation and variability in accident records collection and storage, creating a common accessible database and enabling simple to complex queries and statistics in a fraction of time requested today. Results from a questionnaire submitted to the Local Police in Enna (Italy), before and after the development of the application, helped to understand the current limitation and develop a better application for tablet, focusing on two main aspects, the first is the simplification and standardisation of traditional data acquisition, the second is the integration of different integrated tools (GPS, microphone) to enhance the current accident data collection method and create a common accessible platform. The proposed application has the potential to inform in real-time Traffic Control Centres to act rapidly in order to minimise the impacts and disruption effects, but also to provide to the public informative maps with simple but effective statistics based on the accident history of each road section. The latter has been supported in the questionnaire by the interviewed police officers and may lead to a powerful tool with impacts on behavioural aspects and accident reduction.
