This research assesses the suitability of three management tools for operational performance improvements in micro, small and medium sized (MSMEs ) as members of mutually reciprocal business clubs or engaging in Guanxi Hu.Our research reveals complexities act against multiple iterations of management tools. Our simplified tool offers potential to overcome defensive attitudes in business clubs, impacted upon by stage of genesis, structure, network centrality and lack of cultural embeddedness. We provide an analytical juxtaposition of ‘same but different’ relationships, with similar intentions, highlighting defensive short term relationships in Western models of mutually reciprocal business clubs, lacking socially and culturally constructed reciprocity.
