Abstract

Dementia presents one of the greatest challenges currently facing individuals and societies. Policy initiatives, hitherto mainly confined to the ‘west’, continue to stress the central role that communication can play in living well, or otherwise, with the condition. However, most available evidence indicates that communicative practices in health and social care contexts, and in wider societies, remain problematic. In response, a series of iterative research projects and consultations in the United Kingdom were undertaken which informed the development of a Dementia Model for Effective Communication (Young et al 2011). In this talk I will describe the conceptual and empirical development of the model and its derivatives, and their role in institutional social care, intercultural dialogue around ageing and dementia, medical education and intergenerational communication. I will also describe ongoing conceptual work around key notions of Being, personhood and self-categorisation related to the experiences of living with dementia (Young et al 2014). I will present this work as part of the ongoing aspiration of our Association to conduct research informed by theory of the social psychology of language and communication which engages with major societal challenges worldwide.
