Abstract

An estimated 500 open line freight train derailments occur in Europe each year with huge financial and societal impact. Inspection and monitoring technologies help in preventing derailments, but their potential is still not fully understood and realised. The paper presents the outcomes of research carried out within the EU FP7 project D-RAIL and provides an overview and critical assessment of current and emerging inspection and monitoring techniques related to derailment prevention and mitigation. The research covered wayside and vehicle-based equipment and dedicated recording cars. The collection of data looked at technical parameters of both infrastructure and rolling stock related to major causes of derailment. For each parameter and cause, the relevant inspection and monitoring systems have been identified and also their utilisation in European countries. After completing a comprehensive survey and inspection of monitoring systems, the research has assessed the selected systems to determine their suitability to capture key derailment parameters from both the technology and derailment perspectives. The assessment enabled the identification of functions missing in existing systems (gap analysis) or which require further development in order to significantly enhance and improve derailment prevention. Factors to be assessed for the technology systems have also been directly related to the derailment analysis, technology integration and operational assessment.
