Abstract

In the last four decades, there has been a massive increase in female schooling, accompanied by a reversal of the gender schooling gap. We offer a theoretical explanation for this change. We construct an equilibrium search model with inter-linked frictional labour and marriage markets. We incorporate two types of return to male schooling: a labour market return (higher expected wages) and a marriage market return (increased marriageability due to high wages). We establish that an increase in the level of female education and/or the share of educated women can reduce incentives for men to invest in education (due to its effect in the marriage market).
