Abstract

Marine simulation relies on effective predictions of ship roll motion. A good prediction must include the non-linear damping behaviour that occurs due to the effect of eddies and skin friction. This paper creates a non-linear model for ship roll damping and then validates the model using uncertainty analysis and by applying the model to an independent set of experimental results. The model has been created by conducting a series of free decay roll experiments in a towing tank. To create the non-linear model a curve fitting method has been applied using a penalty function method. The penalty function method gives an indication of which coefficients have the greatest impact on roll motion. These coefficients are then used in the model. To carry out the uncertainty analysis, each experiment is repeated a minimum of eleven times which allows the repeatability of the experiments to be examined. Zeroth order uncertainty analysis has also been completed using a Taylor series approach. It is shown that the newly proposed non-linear model better represents roll damping compared to a linear model, and can readily be incorporated into a time-domain ship simulator.
