Notes: This is an essay on music and consciousness for a handbook currently being put together by the editors. The blurb for the volume as a whole is given below. The chapter has been accepted for publication, and is currently at the copy-editing stage. I would estimate that it will be published in 2019. Drawing on constructive methodological differences between disciplines, the Handbook seeks not only to explain and to observe, but also to explore and to engage its topic. As per the general remit of Oxford Handbook articles, the essays in this volume will be expected not simply to provide an overview of scholarship, but rather to "evaluate the current thinking on a field or topic, and make an original argument about the future direction of the debate."
