Abstract

Umberto Giordano’s opera Andrea Chénier opened at La Scala in Milan on 28 March 1896. This essay explores the historical misrepresentations that feature within the opera's libretto and asks whether it is precisely those elision, particularly relating to 'terrorism' that made the opera so resonant for late nineteenth-century Italian audience and for audiences today.
