Development and characterization of new magnesium-yttrium-calcium alloys

Abstract

Owing to their lightweight and excellent specific mechanical properties, the utilization of magnesium based materials promises the desired weight/energy savings in demanding applications. Recently, yttrium and calcium alloying additions to magnesium are being extensively researched for their potential use in medical implants. In this regard, an attempt is made in this study to develop and summarize the properties of new magnesium-yttrium-calcium alloys. The WX11 (Mg-1Y-1Ca) and WX21 (Mg-2Y-1Ca) alloys required for this study were developed using disintegrated melt deposition method followed by hot extrusion and investigated for their microstructural, mechanical and oxidation properties. Microstructural characterization reveals fine grain size and Mg2Ca & Mg24Y5 phases in both the WX11 and WX21 alloys. Mechanical properties examined under indentation and compression loads indicated property enhancement due to Y and Ca alloying addition. The oxidation response investigated in 300 – 470 °C temperature range revealed slight improvement in oxidation resistance with increasing yttrium amounts. The observed properties are discussed using process-structure property relationship.
