Performance Analysis of a Multi-hop UCRN with Co-Channel Interference

Abstract

In this paper, the performance of a multi-hop underlaycognitive radio network (UCRN) is thoroughly assessed. Theco-existence of a primary transceiver and co-channel interference(CCI) are considered along with an uplink single-input multipleoutput(SIMO) system utilizing selection combining (SC) andmaximal ratio combining (MRC) techniques at the receivernodes. First, the equivalent per-hop signal-to-interference-plusnoiseratio (SINR) for the UCRN is formulated. Second, theexact cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the probabilitydistribution function (PDF) of the per-hop SINR are derivedand discussed. Furthermore, approximate expressions exhibitingreduced complexity for the per hop equivalent CDF are derivedto provide more insights. From the resulting CDF, the exactoutage performance of the CR network is thoroughly assessed.In addition, mathematical formulas are derived for the averageerror probability and system ergodic capacity. Finally, the derivedanalytical expressions are validated by presenting numerical andsimulation results for different network parameters. The resultsshow that several factors contribute to the degradation of the systemperformance, namely the interference power constraint, theprimary transmitter power and the presence of CCI, especiallyin the case where the CCI increases linearly with the secondarytransmission powers.
