Abstract

Traditional DP capability calculation (DPCap) described in IMCA M140 [1] is the industry standard for DP vessel's station-keeping capability calculation. In DpCap plots, static environmental mean forces are considered only. For dynamic effects, normally a constant percentage is taken into account, e.g. 20% to dynamic allowance. Response times of thruster and controller are not taken into account. DPCap calculation is very suitable for DP vessel design stage, comparing different designs. But in operation planning stage, it cannot answer positioning accuracy or if the vessel will actually maintain position in a limited sea state.DP time-domain simulations is more appropriate to determine DP performance. Vessel mathematical model is used and the equations of motion are solved in time-domain. Normally low frequency model in 3DOF is used and expended to 6DOF to include wave frequency loads and motions. DP controller, state observer and thrust allocation module are designed accordingly to maintain vessel position and heading against environmental disturbance. This paper gives DP performance calculation by a time-domain approach for two different OSV vessel in selected weather condition. Passive nonlinear wave filter, linear quadratic optimal controller and general thrust allocation module are designed for the calculation.
