Abstract

The social space of national stadia can be understood as increasingly 'political'. In fact, these two examples are case-studies of 'political' dimensions of national stadia which are intrinsic to them qua symbols of national identity, but in addition to unhappy 'politicisations' of Wembley and the Stade de France through terrorism, these sites of sport and social space have experienced other less 'catastrophic' forms of political expression over their brief existences, and this chapter will endeavour to unpack a range of these politicisations, engaging with B. Anderson's theories of 'imagined community', and J.-M. Brohm's conceptualisations of football as an 'une peste émotionnelle'.
