Sondheim has occasionally explored a temporal/moral awareness that can be understood through Buddhist, Heideggerian, and Proustian ideas of time. In Pacific Overtures (1976), tragedies of invasion, murder and rape are made endurable by being framed in an aestheticized Zen temporality. More unexpectedly, Sunday in the Park with George (1984) uses tropes of artistic vision – as well as memory, intuition, and love – to link the eternally aesthetic to the temporal and everyday, and show the potential they have to illuminate each other. The translation of visual media into minimalism creates a space where ‘timeless’ awareness can be experienced in time.
