Anatomy and drawing have an enduring relationship thatcontinues to evolve with respect to modern visual artisticlearning methods. Novel strategies can be designed to providecost-effective and practical solutions for enhancing learningwhile addressing the complex environment facing modernanatomy education. We have designed ORDER (Observe-Reflect-Draw-Edit-Repeat), a novel cyclical artistic learning process. Weinitially investigated ORDER in the context of a first-yearmedical surface anatomy practical (ORDER-SAP) by identifyingpre-post test performance and student perceptions. Based onour findings, we subsequently developed and evaluated theprocess as an online interactive tutorial (ORDER-IT). We showthat our optional, flexible and self-directed delivery strategy forORDER is more effective for learning than a compulsory, timedand structured approach. While both ORDER-SAP and ORDER-ITsignificantly (P < 0.001) improved test scores, performance wassignificantly (P < 0.001) greater with standard methods thanwith ORDER-SAP and was significantly (P < 0.001) greater withORDER-IT than with a control. We also found that ORDER canbe used effectively by medical students even if they have a nonvisuallearning preference or a non-artistic background.Performance of students with visual and artistic preferencesusing ORDER were not significantly different (P > 0.05) to thosewithout. Analysis of student perceptions has allowed us toidentify areas of strength in addition to aspects of ORDER thatcan be enhanced.
