Abstract

Planned city is a recurring theme in the history of urban planning but its objectives, underlying visions and contextual frames have varied in different places and times. This chapter provides an overview of planned city and discusses some of the most influential ones including the garden city, the functional city, the monumental city and the eco city. It argues that while visionary idealism often presents the best urban planning, stripped of its social context and devoid of democratic processes, a blank canvas approach can have dire socio-spatial consequences.
