Abstract

An overview of the results form a three-year research study on the ultimate strength of composite ship hulls is presented here. A progressive failure model is developed based on the finite element method which enables the comparison of alternative failure theories for composite materials. From a series of validation studies, the Tsai Wu failure criteria are adopted with an instantaneous degradation model for the propagation of damage. Parametric studies are performed in order to investigate the effects form initial geometric imperfections on ultimate strength of composite plates, considering alternative boundary constraints. These show significant reductions in the strength of thick plates but with limited effect on slender sections. Considering the response of a composite hull girder from the analysis at interframe, deck panel and global hull girder level, results show significant differences that cannot be neglected which result from interaction effects between local and global deflections of the stiffened panels.
