Abstract

© 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Many primary immunodeficiencies arise because of defects affecting development or function of one or more cellular products of hematopoiesis. Prophylactic antimicrobial treatment, and replacement of immunoglobulin, may prevent some infection, but replacement of the hematopoietic stem cell containing the genetic defect with a healthy stem cell affords the opportunity to replace non-functional cells, or permit development of cellular elements that were blocked by the mutated gene.
