Abstract

Epigenetics is a field of biology that is generating considerable excitement in modern medicine, principally because it can explain how the interactions of our genetic background with the environment and our age-acquired experiences influence vitality and health as we progress through middle to old age. Importantly, epigenetic processes are highly dynamic and can be modified by environmental factors and drugs, which raises the real possibility of epigenetic therapies. Furthermore, there is growing interest in the concept that there may be dynamic epigenetic mechanisms that impact on the germline such that phenotypes acquired in the adult may be transmitted independently of DNA sequence to children and grandchildren, potentially influencing life choices (e.g. diet, alcohol, even exercise) and disease susceptibility.
