Abstract

© The authors and ICE Publishing: All rights reserved, 2015. The increase in global temperature and the continuing threat of climate change has occurred due to rapid escalation of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, especially CO2. This is directly related to human activity and comparatively recent combustion of fossil fuels. To compensate for the anthropogenic emissions of CO2, it is essential to optimise natural processes which have the potential to remove substantial amounts of atmospheric CO2. Here we introduce the EPSRC funded SUCCESS project that will contribute to national climate mitigation targets by adding a significant carbon capture function to artificial landscape design and soil engineering, adding value to current practice through carefuse use of manufactured materials. Geotechnical considerations are combined with design of planting and other end use requirements to provide a range of desirable ecosystem services.
