Abstract

© 2015: The Royal Institution of Naval Architects. To develop fishing vessels that can support sustainability in the fisheries sector, the design process should establish solutions that respond to social, economic and environmental issues related to the fishing vessels. Changes in fish resources, increased awareness in the environment, continued technological developments, the enforcement of new regulations, and in addition, future demand on the fisheries sector, have reformed the design requirements and considerations when designing fishing vessels. With all these issues, it is a difficult challenge to develop sustainable fishing vessels for Indonesian fisheries. Thus, this paper identifies the design requirements and issues that should be considered when designing sustainable fishing vessels. Furthermore, any challenges that could inhibit the development of sustainable fishing vessels in Indonesia and the action necessary to overcome those difficulties are defined.
