Abstract

The work's title come from shared recollection of a photograph of the body of a dead horse, blown into a tree by a shell during World War I. Using foley techniques, the work attempts to reproduce the sound of the incident that caused this. The accompanying video provides a silent 15 minute countdown interspersed with glimpses of the recording process and a subtitled discussion of the image we are sonically re-staging. This sound and video installation explores the current state of memory at a moment when the profusion of images threatens to debase their power as historical documents and when ideas of authenticity and truth seem to acquire a new, elastic character. One hundred years since the First World War and twenty years since, as adolescents, the artists first glimpsed documents from that era the piece uses simulated sounds and staged texts/video documentation to unpick the resonance of an absent image and an unreliable memory.
