Abstract

© 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. All rights reserved. This chapter deals with mechanical micro machining using a geometrically defined cutter edge, such as micro turning, micro milling, micro drilling and micro grinding. It presents the latest developments in micro cutting mechanics with emphasis on three aspects, that is, chip formation and minimum chip thickness; micro cutting force and specific cutting energy; and surface generation and burr formation. Micro cutting, in particular micro milling process, is capable of machining high aspect ratios and complex geometries with reasonable surface quality. However, some issues, such as excess tool wear, low strength, stiffness of the micro tools, and unpredictable tool failure, limit its applications on machining difficult-to-machine materials. Two scientific approaches: vibration assisted micro cutting and laser assisted micro cutting to overcome these limitations, are discussed.
