Abstract

Portuguese as a Non-Mother Tongue (PLNM) is defined as opposed to the concept of Portuguese as a mother tongue. It has been a curricular subject included in the Portuguese Educational System since 2006-2007 in Basic Education and since 2007-2008 in Secondary Education. First, I approach some operational concepts in PLNM, such as mother tongue, foreign language and second language. Then I briefly refer the linguistic rights and the right to integration and citizenship of PLNM students. Then I analyse the legislation related to PLNM as well as its documents of reference.
