Study of engine waste heat recovery using Organic Rankine cycle integrated with latent heat storage system

Abstract

The utilisation of heat recovery technologies attracts increasing attentions because of the environment problems caused by burning conventional energy resources such as oil, natural gases and coal. The Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) has been widely accepted as the potential technology integrating with Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) in order to improve the overall thermal efficiency of the engine, reduce the engine emissions and improve the fuel economy. One of the main barriers to use ORC integrated with ICE is the variable heat source conditions from the engine operational conditions. The coolant and exhaust energy from the engine occupy around 30 % and 40 % of the overall fuel energy, respectively. The development optimised control strategies or advanced waste heat recovery systems are therefore required to balance two main heat sources from the engine. Latent Heat Storage (LHS) system can be potentially used to recover and balance the intermittent exhaust energy from the engine. A case study of an engine ORC integrated with LTS system is presented for the recovery of coolant and exhaust energy from a 6.5 kW small engine. The performance of the proposed system on the engine overall energy efficiency and fuel economic study have been evaluated.
