Hélia Correia’s Lillias Fraser, a novel that takes place in Scotland and in Portugal in the 18th century, follows Lillias’ life, showing her premonitory visions of death and disgrace, as well as various identity fictions, which are created in order for her to survive. This essay offers a reading of the novel, which follows the life path of the protagonist focusing on her impossibility of showing her identity in connection with her impossibility of speaking. And her possibility of recovering her identity emerges only when the protagonist meets a character from another fiction that takes her to a no man’s land.
