Abstract

© 2015 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved. This article provides a review of the idea of the resilient city, which has become influential in recent years. The concepts of resilience and urban resilience are defined in the introductory section. The article then proceeds to outline the influential ecological conception of resilience and its application to cities, before highlighting some recent criticisms of this approach. The remainder of the article discusses developments in three main areas of research: adaptation to climate change and natural disasters, urban governance and institutions, and urban economic resilience. Finally, a brief summary highlights the main points of the article.
