Abstract

Post-Specimen: Object Encounters between Art, Science and Curating examines the ways in which scientific objects held within museums (and other collections) act as inspiration to contemporary art practice and its histories, aesthetics and curating. It draws upon the idea of the specimen as ‘an example of a thing in question for the purposes of investigation or scientific study’ by seeking to reflect upon, reframe, question and critique the presentation of scientific knowledge by investigating those art practices, curatorial strategies, philosophies and historiographies that have responded to scientific collections (and the objects therein) and thus generated new pathways of artistic, curatorial and cultural understanding. Consequently, the ‘specimen’ will be treated as a source of critical enquiry that arouses and radicalises artistic, historical and curatorial approaches through the problematising the representation of scientific knowledge in visual culture. The book will employ the expertise of a wide range of leading specialists within the visual arts – including art practitioners, art historians, critics, poets, curators and anthropologists – to provide a thought-provoking and pluralistic consideration of the relationship between art and scientific display.
