Abstract

Current to late 2018 Collaborative Textile project with Matts Gallery London and 9 Elms Development. in conjunction with South London Community Groups, and technique specific organisations such as the Embroidery Guild. Funded by Bellway Construction £25,000. 44 participants are stiching a panel each featuring a letter or spacer in a work that carries a text by Guy Debord of the Situationist International. "Boredom is Always Counter-revolutionary". This is acilitated through a series of workshops (7 to date) held at the Rose Community Center in Battersea, with the participation of James Hunting Course Leaser BA Textiles London Metorpolitan University. Participants are mentored by the Artists and exchange information about aproaches and progress. A central componnent of the work is a full colour publication, with each individual panel reproduced full page with the maker named. The publication will also documetn the process of making - the workshops and so forth with contributions from participants - and is framed by a text on the By Our Own Hand project by writer and curator Jes Fernie and another text by Richard Grayson The finished multi-panel work will be first shown in the shell of the new Matts Gallery building in Wandsworth. It is ht en hoped to tour the project. By Our Own Hand investigates shifting positionings of ideas and formulations of labour and the ideological constructions around them. It makes reference to the textile works made by un-named Afghan women embroiders for Aligherio e Boetti in the 1970's and 80's. The techniques used were forms of primary economic activity that in the West, with industrialisation, shifted from being a means of production to a means of recreation. The value attached to the activity has experienced parallel movments shifts: from manual labour being seen as oppressive, to representing forms of non-alienated labour, to not being labour but a reclaiming of agency and creativity on the part of the individual.
