Abstract

From feminist graffiti on billboards across London to the crowded bathroom stalls of San Francisco dyke bars, the spaces and networks through which public lesbian identities emerged in the 1970s and 1980s have been variously mythologised, misunderstood and marginalised. The activity of gathering the traces of these varied and thriving communities was once best served by its own members, shared in private, published or displayed within queer-run enterprises. Yet over the past three decades, this lesbian testimonial and evidence gathering has been subject to marginalisation and amnesia within the mainstream gay movement. Deep Down Body Thirst examines the contemporary resonances of these historical communities by drawing on photographic and archival ephemera. The show excavates a period of visual culture that was forged against the political backdrop of the ‘long 1980s’–a time characterised by the onset of the AIDS crisis; censorship governed informally by the moral panic of mainstream media, and officially by obscenity laws; the massive economic and urban transformation signalled by neo-liberalism; and, in the UK, the legislation enacted through Section 28, which prohibited the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality in public bodies such as councils and schools. At a time of suppression and societal homophobia, the mediums of photography, film, video, and printed matter played an important role in the resistance of queer people.Featuring work by: Lulu Belliveau;Tessa Boffin; Flo Brooks; Phyllis Christopher; Tee A.
