We have had over 15 years since a major call for scholars to examine the role of non-governmental organizations in international business. During this time, we have witnessed the growth of international collaborations with social enterprises and NGOs in what might be termed the ‘third sector’ beyond broad advocacy engagements to create partnerships whose principal purpose resides in operational value-creating activities. Yet it is evident that research in the international business field is not representative of this fundamental change in the structuring of relationships and opportunities. This paper examines the current state of knowledge in international cross-sector collaborations and begins to highlight areas for future work.
