Wavelet-neural network VLC receiver in the presence of artificial light interference

Abstract

Visible light communications (VLCs) using white light emitting diodes have become popular because of the ability to provide illumination and data communications simultaneously. There are a number of challenges in VLC systems among which the most critical being the effect of fluorescent light interference (FLI), which is largely ignored. In this letter, we study the effect of FLI and introduce the wavelet transform and artificial neural network based receiver to reduce the effect of FLI as well as increase the available data rates. An error free data communication up to 150 Mb/s is achieved using non-return-to-zero on-off keying (OOK-NRZ) modulation. This is the highest practically reported data rate for a single link using OOK-NRZ and a p-i-n photodetector. © 1989-2012 IEEE.
