Abstract

This paper introduces a level 3 charging system which aims to reduce the charging time to less than 15 minutes with 350 kW charging power. Two architectures of a fast charging station based on the isolation requirement through low and high-frequency transformers are introduced and discussed. Focusing on the DC-DC charging stage, this paper also provides a detailed comparison of the Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converter and the Interleaved Buck Converter (IBC), which are considered as two of the most suitable converters that can serve as a fast DC charger. Technical evaluation and comparison based on different performance indices such as volume, efficiency, number of components etc. as well as simulation of the two converters are presented. Finally, comparison results are introduced and a final discussion and conclusion are presented on which topology seems more optimum to be used as a fast DC charger.
