Abstract

This paper defends an ‘integrationist’ approach to trade justice, articulating distributive principles for trade that are sensitive to a wider terrain of moral concerns, such as poverty and inequality, natural resource holdings, environmental issues, and war. It juxtaposes this account with the trend to articulate ‘internal’ principles of trade justice – principles formulated independent of these concerns. It shows that the integrationist approach has persuasive normative grounding, demonstrates that it offers more plausible conclusions on a set of concrete issues surrounding the harms of trade, exploitation, and inequality, and challenges the theoretical framework of the internal approach. Thereby, it steers literature on both trade and global justice towards integrationism.
