Abstract

Buonocore MG. 1955. A simple method of increasing the adhesion of acrylic filling materials to enamel surfaces. J Dent Res 34(6):849-853. This article is the most highly cited paper in the Journal of Dental Research, with 1,473 citations at the time of writing (source: Scopus). The paper describes a concept taken from industry, where phosphoric acid had been used to improve the adhesion of paint and resin coatings to metal surfaces. Could a similar approach be employed to improve the adhesion of acrylic filling materials to teeth? In just over 4 pages, Buonocore essentially revolutionized the field of restorative dentistry. The acid-etch technique for the first time enabled strong adhesion between filling materials and the tooth structure, resulting not only in a new field of research but more importantly in immeasurable benefits to dental patients worldwide. This work continues to accumulate citations, and yet has also sometimes been overlooked in historical articles (Yan, 2015). By highlighting it here, we aim to ensure that this key piece of dental research will no longer miss out on the recognition it deserves.
