Abstract

The book stages a conversation between Ranciere's politics of aesthetics and feminist theory. It argues that Ranciere's approach to politics and art accomplishes an important intervention into aesthetics, especially around the idea of dissensus and the redistribution of the sensible. Ranciere's egalitarian approach shows how art and politics, in different ways, can interrupt our ways of perceiving and understanding the world, thereby opening up the possibility of transforming common sense. At the same time it argues that there are some blindspots in his approach around race and gender, and that feminist and race theory helps to elucidate those blindspots. By utilising examples of art works and film, some of which Ranciere himself refers to, others of which he does not, the book illustrates Ranciere's analyses, while it also shows how Ranciere builds on some key ideas of Kant, Hegel and Foucault. Further, it provides a Rancierian critique of Heidegger's approach to art, drawing also on Levinas.
