The chapter analyses documents concerning Italian 19th century publishers preserved in the Hachette archives (held in Caen by IMEC) in order to retrace communications and agreements regarding French works published in Italian translations. Such documents are presented in the context of the bilateral agreements in force in Europe before the Berne convention for the protection of international copyright was signed in 1886. By doing so, the article demonstrates that the publication of Il giro del mondo, so far known as a counterfeit copy of Le tour du monde, was actually published in Italy thanks to an agreement with Hachette that did not protect the copyright of the text, but regulated the purchase of the illustrations by the Italian publisher. Other case studies presented in the chapter show that selling images was a priority for publishers, whereas texts were translated at almost no costs, thus offering to Italian publishers cheap and interesting books and journals that were profitably aimed at widening the Italian book market.
