Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of the team coach in enabling the individual and collective potential of teams and their members. Team coaching is a growing HRD intervention for organisations particularly in times of organisational change (Ridler Report 2017). However, the research base for this practice is extremely weak. Increasingly HR managers and internal executive coaches are supporting teams who may be stuck, or are facing significant challenges without necessarily having the confidence and expertise to do so. This paper offers some practical guidance to team coaches in noticing the relational aspects of team behaviour and suggests conversational strategies that can enable constructive dialogue enabling each member to contribute fully to the team’s performance.
